How do I get companies to advertise on my website
First of all you need a venue that can bring in a level of response and value to your potential customers.
If you have a site that reaches an audience of people who are willing to respond to advertising, then you have a market and you have the basis of a saleable commodity.
However, one thing you should certainly do before you start is determine whether you need to build and design your offerings to generate response or to provide awareness. Of course, a lot depends on the niche of your website.
For example, if you offer content for consumers who play sports, it is unlikely that advertisers would be interested in brand awareness advertising, unless they were Nike or Adidas with a large sponsorship budget. If you attract sufficient numbers for these guys to be interested on a corporate level, then you really are onto a winner. However, the likelyhood is that most sports goods and service companies will be interested in clicks and sales.
On the other side is the B2B companies who may want a mixture of awareness and branding ads, as well as a decent click through rate response from their ads. It all depends on your niche and how you want to present it to your visitors and advertisers.
So, the first thing you have to do is work out which advertisers are likely to be the biggest target market for you and what type of campaign they will want to run. This will then enable you to look at the design, placement and general structure of your site before doing anything else.
Then you can do keyword searches on the search engines and find sites which compete with your product area. Take a look at how they do it and make a list of the companies that advertise. If you do your research well, you could end up with quite a large list of potential advertisers in no time.
